Friends and travel guidebooks had all recommended that if you wanted to go to Alcatraz, you needed to book well in advance. Considering it had been a bit of a rush to get organised for our holiday, we had only done this a couple of days before we flew out from Australia. So, on our first full day in the beautiful city of San Fran we walked down to the pier with our printed ticket and caught the ferry to the island. We took the audio tour which really is a must since it helps contextualise everything you see – it was so well done that even the kids thoroughly spellbound. Here’s some snaps taken during our roam around the infamous Alcatraz Island prison.

Great images Distan, was it really creepy being there? I wish they had done the same thing to Pentridge Prison when it closed down. I am disappointed I never go to see it. I think that prisons are important to our history as well as the pretty homes.

Thanks Leanne. Yeah, its frustrating sometimes when it seems that Australia doesn’t seem to celebrate or preserve many of its landmarks – colonial or contemporary. I often think that if landmark ‘x’ was in Europe for example, it would be protected and honoured , given tourism status and maintained for generations to come.
