Holiday road: Bixby Bridge and the Big Sur coastline, California

We had been so looking forward to driving the coast road along Highway 1 that it was a little disappointing to wake and find the day was cold, heavily overcast and drizzly. I can imagine how glorious the Pacific ocean would of looked had it been bathed in sunlight, sparkling under clear blue skies with waves crashing into the rocky outcrops below.

This set of photos were taken as we drove south through Big Sur. Sure, picture perfect skies may of provided me the opportunity for postcard vista’s but I sort of liked the grey, steeliness of the sea and the slightly muted tones of the coastline.  If anything, I would of preferred dramatic, rain ladened clouds to the formless shroud that blanketed us that day. All-the-same, nothing could of obscured Big Sur’s rugged, windswept beauty – it was stunning. Unforgettable.

I really enjoyed the Californian coastline; it was quite dramatic. People had said that maybe we wouldn’t be that impressed since we’re so used to scenic coastlines in Australia but I have to say, I thought it was brilliant. Thanks for your kind words too James. Much appreciated.
