Sculpture by the Sea: Tamarama to Bondi
Sculpture by the Sea has returned this year to line the coast walk between Tamarama and Bondi beach.
This year my youngest son was keen to come down and shoot some pictures too. So, with alarm set at 4.58am and everything organised the night before, we jumped in the car and headed off in the near darkness. Thankfully, we lucked out a parking spot not too far away and were down on Tamarama beach ready and waiting for the sunrise. You’d think it would be pretty quiet at 5.30am on a Sunday morning but there were a few dozen like minded souls already there with camera’s or their active wear on :-). Incredibly, the numbers of people who suddenly appear minutes after the sun rises never ceases to amaze me. They just double, and then double again with every passing minute. It’s exceptionally difficult to grab a photo of any sculpture without a mass of people in the background…needless to say, I’m sure they think the same of me too.
My Quick Tips for Seeing the Sculptures?
- The best time to see them is at sunrise because (a) it is less crowded, and (b) the light is crisp, warm and glorious.
- Move quickly, shoot and the move on. I like to be done within the hour and be back at the car by 7am. Coffee beckons back over at Bronte beach (which is my preferred caffeine hole).
If you’re in Sydney, you can still get down there to see them until the 6th November.

These are just grand, as always Distan. I could almost smell the ocean from up here in Katoomba ! I think ‘The Big Haviana’ should have a permanent home, like other notables of Australia ~ The Big Potato, The Big Merino, The Big Banana, et al.
You could always start up a foundation for same…

Hehe, the Big Haviana! I think that would be cool, and quite appropriate given our love for the beach 🙂
