Sunrise to sunset: 2015 New years day, Sydney, Australia

Sunrise at Bronte

If you saw my previous post about Sydney’s New Years Eve fireworks, you’d know I was hoping for a little more than an hour’s sleep before having to get up for sunrise photo’s. In the end, all I could manage was to lay on the bed for 34 minutes and count down the minutes before I had to head off again.

Last year, I visited Sydney’s Balmoral beach for the first sunrise of the new year. This time, I choose to revisit my old favourite, Bronte beach. After grabbing these images, I dove into the water to have my first swim of 2015 and followed up with a visit to my favourite coffee shop for a morning charge of caffeine. It’s always a glorious way to herald in the new year.

Camp Cove and a Watson’s Bay sunset

After returning home, I dumped these images into the computer, did a quick edit and decided to have a lay down at around 11am. I didn’t wake again until 1.30pm! Luckily, I had arranged to meet up with an old school friend and his family who have been visiting from the U.S. in the afternoon. It would of been a terrible shame to have slept away any more of the day.

This time, we all headed off to Watson’s Bay to have an afternoon swim at Camp Cove. Later, we couldn’t help but buy some seafood from Doyles, sit down in the park overlooking Sydney’s beautiful harbour and wast the sun set over the city. I have to say, it was a lovely way to bookend the first day the new year.

Oh thanks, Paula. Its really on days like this that I’m reminded how lucky we are in Sydney. Most of the time, like everyone else Im sure, I just head off to work and not think about the beauty on our doorstep. Stangely enough, photography has helped me to reconnect and appreciate our landscape and community in greater ways.
Hope you had a great new years day. Here’s to 2015!

Ok now i’m jealous! I think i’ll leave Austria for Australia! What a great way to start the new year 😀 All the photos are amazing! They really transfer a chill and warm mood! Here it was so freezing cold and windy…i wanted so much to be out and take photos but when your fingers freeze under the thickest gloves that you own then it means you should just stay home! 😛

You make me laugh, Alex. I really love the cold weather but not the wind; so you can have that one. Most of the time i count down the days to winter but sometimes I really do appreciate the summer warmth. This new years day, a case in point. I know Im a little strange like that but nothing makes me happier than a cold and rainy day!
You should definately visit though – try new years next year, no?!

  5. Wonderful shots as usual. I really like the silhouette of people watching the first sunrise of 2015. I spent my first day of the year traveling on a train. Relaxing day just watching the world go by out the window.

Your Bronte images bring much joy to my heart, our parents ashes were scattered from the far walk way into the water over the rocks as per your images. They swam in the pool everyday into their 80’s. Do you live in the area Distan?

Hi Lexa, that’s a beautiful thing to do for your parents. It’s something I think I’d like too since I hold Bronte so close to my heart.
I grew up in Bronte; we moved when I was 18. Now that I have my own family, we call Lane Cove home these days – we couldn’t afford Bronte. Fortunately, it only takes me around 15 minutes to drive to Bronte early in the morning though so I still visit frequently. Where abouts are you?

We have some very funny pics throwing a paper bag of ashes over the fence, then watching the waves wash over the rocks carry our mum into the ocean. 🙂

I am unsure of the protocol for permission, yet would you mind if I added a few of your Bronte images to my blog, of course with your name and link to your site. ? Please do let me know if this is not appropriate or do not wish to. I just have not seen images of Bronte that evokes strong emotions for me. Cheers Lexa 🙂

No problem, Lexa. More than happy for you to use some a few of the watermarked Bronte pics and link back here. Its very kind of you to say such lovely things about those images.
Apologies for taking so long to get back to you too; we’re up at Hawks Nest for a wee family holiday.

Wow beautiful. A sunset glazed in turqoise. What an enchanting way to start the new year, especially seen through the eyes of a Northern hemisphere inhabitant who hasn’t seen much else than snow for weeks !
