Sunrise over Bronte beach, Sydney, Australia

Sunrise over Bronte Beach

Last weekend I decided to set an early alarm and visit Bronte beach again. It’s been quite a few months since my last visit and with the weather warming up down here in the southern hemisphere I didn’t have the excuse of a cold winter morning to dissuade me.

It was a beautifully clear morning which is great for sight-seeing and swimming but not so great for photo’s. Even without the clouds the sunrise was glorious. Pastel hues of gold and amber chased the mauve and blue tones of the retreating night. The light north-easterly breeze helped flatten the ocean and quieten the tranquility of the low tide even further. For most of the photo’s in this series I used my 9 stop polarising filter to grab longer exposures to smooth the water further.

And, if you’re wondering; I chickened out of having a swim this time. It was just a little too cold for my liking 😉

Thank you. We spoiled for beaches really, aren’t we? I confess to being a bit lazy when it comes to visiting other local beaches but Bronte holds a special place in my heart.

I have to say I have been to Bronte many times and it didn’t look as good to me as it does in your photos. Pretty sure you need to send them to the tourism board 🙂

Cheers, Alex. From memory, it was about 18C and warming quickly. Early spring can sometimes be quite hot in Sydney and I seem to recall we had a number of 30 degrees days back then. I suspect it will be getting fairly cool now in your neck of the woods, no?

  7. Beautiful Distan. Is that the beach that has the swimming pool filled by the tide?. If I remember it is one of your favourite spots.

Thanks, James. Good memory! Yes, Bronte is a favourite haunt because I grew up there as a child. I spent many a day playing in the pool and later body-surfing in the ocean. Bronte has 2 tidal pools next to one another and these are beside the ocean pool (concrete) which gets fed and refreshed from sea pumps.
Photography wise, I always tend to prefer to do my sunrise visits at low tide as this affords me the opportunity to walk across the exposed rocks and get more interesting compositions. At high tide, the rock pools are completely submerged and you can only shoot from the elevated board walk which is not my preferred perspective. Plus, I’ve come into the habit of shooting some sunrise photo’s, having a quick swim and then heading up one of the cafe’s for an early morning coffee. It just makes me smile inside.

Hehe, thank you. I quite liked those photos of your cat, Mickey, though. My cat also rules the roost too – much to the dogs chagrin.

      1. Mickey is usually very photogenic. There’s this photo I took ages ago *sad face* I can’t find the memory card, anyway, it’s like 7 in the morning, the suns just risen and I’ve woken up to him sticking his head through my curtains to look outside. He sat down, and posed perfectly when I went outside in my jammies to take a picture and it looked amazing.
