Event : City2Surf fun-run, Sydney

I’ve had blog guilt now for the last 3 weeks. Blame it on the cold, being busy at work and the Olympics coverage; I’ve just found it difficult to get out and shoot. Well, after falling asleep in front of the TV again last night (damn you 10m platform divers!), I awoke early and had no excuse for not heading out. Today was Sydney’s famous fun-run – the The Sun-Herald’s City2Surf. Starting from Hyde Park in the CBD, entrants take off along the 14km route and finish at Bondi beach. The event has been going since 1971 and the crowd gets bigger and bigger each year. I heard on the radio this morning that there were 80,000 participants – a far cry from the 2,000 that entered 41 years ago. And, no, I’ve never run it myself. 🙂

Canon 7D | EF 70-200 4.0L & EF 24-105 4.0L | Handheld

Above: 8.00am and the first bunch are off!

Above: 2 minutes and 7 seconds later and the front runners have already made it down William’s street and are about to run beneath King’s Cross.

Above: Thought I’d get a bit artistic. This one sort of reminds me of a painters paint pallet.

Above: The shot prior gave me the idea for this photo. The onlookers had been relatively stationary so I was able to drag the shutter here to create this effect with the moving runners in the background. The colour worked well.

Oh thanks Xandré. They’re my favs too. The first few shots were just there to set context so people could realise those last images were actually of the runners going past. I was so happy that they turned out exactly as I imagined.

Cheers Karen. I like the colours and movement thrown from the runners whilst the onlookers remained still enough for me to get the images I was after too.

Thank you, much appreciated. I’ve tried taking this type of shot before but I never got the result I was after. The early morning light helped me here.
