Last weekend I was back down in Victoria for a job and had the privilege to shoot the daughter of my friend, Karen. Caitlin is a dancer and along with her friend Mia, they both had the courage to brave the wintery evening, go outside and have their photo taken while being covered with flour. I have to say, the girls were terrific! Whilst the rest of us were rugged up with 3-4 layers of clothes, Caitlin and Mia jumped and twirled time after time until we got the shots. And, for our first attempt, I think they’ve come out pretty well  :-).
Stay tuned for some more photo’s of the girls in coming posts too – we followed up with a lifestyle shoot the next day. They are both just so drop-dead gorgeous I can hardly wait to finish editing them so I can share them with you.
Canon 7D | EF 24-105L | Canon 580EX II & Canon 430EX II Speedlites | Umbrella softbox (camera right) and bare strobe (camera left) | Post: Lightroom 4
Above: Caitlin. I think this shot is beautiful but both Caitlin and her mother tell me that from a dancers perspective it isn’t up to scratch (apparently the feet aren’t pointed enough and the hands aren’t correct either). This took quite a few takes as well to get the powder spray right. Click on the image above to see it larger too – its worth it I think.
Above: Mia. Here, Mia would spring up from a crouched position and form this most amazing shape. Right at the pinnacle of her form, my assistant would throw the flour – snap. Bingo!
Above: Caitlin. This was taken towards the end of the shoot. You can see on the floor that quite a bit of flour had already been used and by this stage Caitlin was caked in enough of the stuff that a little more didn’t matter. Here we sprinkled it through her hair and followed up with the great hair flick.
Above: Caitlin. We covered her arms in flour here while she jumped into the air.
Above: Caitlin (left) & Mia (right). BFF’s.
They have come up a treat, the girls will be very excited to see them.

Thanks Xandré. It was heaps of fun but very, very messy too. I’ve still got a bit of cleaning to do; the flour dust went everywhere.

What a great idea. Looks fun too!

Yeah, we had a blast. I’d use talcum powder next time I think. It’s a finer powder and probably a bit easier to clean up afterwards.

Awesome photographs! Sometimes you have to be messy to get some great shots! Well done, and I truly love your blog! I read about you on Leanne Cole’s blog and had to take a peek. Your work is stunning…..I am hooked.

Hi again Val, so nice to see that you’ve dedicated your blog to the daily happenings of Nikita, Bella and family. We have a beautiful chocolate Labrador called Hannah and we all love her to bits. Nice also to see your Halloween prep too. Its not something that is very big here in Australia but I have to say that it has been gaining traction in the last few years though. We moved to a new suburb a couple of years ago and I can say its pretty popular around here since there are so many kids. Reading your last post has reminded me that we will have to start decorating a bit soon too. Oh, and yes, I will indeed follow along with all your capers. Thanks again for your kind words.

Hi Distan! I am so glad that you had the opportunity to check out my blog and you find me and my little family a great place to visit! We do love our holidays over here and I cannot wait to show everyone the paper mache pumpkins that I am working on that are almost finished. That is so wonderful as well that you too have a dog and I love the name Hannah! I ever so much look forward to sharing little snippets of our life here, and the same goes with yours! All the best! Amazing photos!!! You did a real good job here Distan and also had great models 🙂 I especially love the third photo, it looks so surreal but also dynamic! It’s like she was hit by a solar blast or something, amazing what effects the powder can create with the right light! Very interesting!
